Transportation
Snow Removal
The goal of the City is to make Fitchburg as safe as possible for winter travel. Salting/plowing begins as soon as snow/ice accumulates on the pavement. The City plows over 115 centerline miles of roadway. There are seven routes with a plow truck assigned to each route. A mixture of sand and salt is applied on all major collector streets, intersections, and hills.
Snow Berms
Our main objective is to keep our roadways open for the safe passage of traffic. Where possible, operators try to minimize the size of berms across driveways. However, the City does not have the resources to remove the snow berms. It is a violation of City Ordinances to deposit snow removed from private property or driveway approaches onto public roadways. Tickets will be issued to violators.
Sidewalks
Property owners with sidewalks shall remove any snow and ice accumulation by 6:00 p.m. the day after it has stopped.
Alternate Side Parking
Between November 15 and March 15, no person may park any vehicle between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on the even numbered side of the street on the odd numbered calendar days, and on the odd numbered side of the street on the evened numbered calendar days.
Mailboxes
Snow removal operations occasionally damage mailboxes. If the mailbox was installed and maintained according to current City standards and was damaged by City crews, Public Works will repair the damage. See Mailbox Damage Policy. If the mailbox was not constructed or maintained to current standards, the repairs will be the homeowner’s responsibility.
