What is Public Works?

 

The Public Works Department is committed to providing a high   quality level of services to the residents and businesses of our community and protecting the environment. Services are provided by the following five divisions:

 

Streets
Maintains and repairs the network of streets, sidewalks, street lights, and traffic signals throughout our community. Street maintenance includes pothole patching, roadside mowing, tree trimming, brush clearing, snow removal, and street sign installation.


Solid Waste - (Refuse & Recycling Collection)
Provides weekly service for refuse collection as well as every other week collection of recycling for residential homes up to four units by an outside contractor. Also provides oversight of our nationally recognized recycling program.


Engineering
Plans capital projects and prepares construction plans for street maintenance, sanitary and storm sewer projects, and water facilities and distribution systems. Provides construction supervision and inspection services on these projects. Reviews plans of municipal improvement designs for new subdivision developments and capital improvement projects throughout the city. Reviews site plans for commercial developments.

 

Water Utility
Provides planning, construction, and maintenance of Fitchburg's public water supply and distribution system. Ensures compliance with applicable DNR, EPA, and PSC requirements.

 

Sanitary Sewer Utility
Provides planning, construction and maintenance of Fitchburg's public sanitary sewer collection system. Ensures compliance with applicable DNR requirements.


Stormwater Utility
Maintains and upgrades the City's stormwater infrastructure. Ensures compliance with applicable DNR and EPA regulations. Provides services such as street sweeping, public education, basin improvement and streambank stabilization projects, stormwater testing and planning, and culvert and storm sewer repair.

 

Climate Protection Initiatives

Fitchburg began studying climate protection initiatives in 2007.  This page contains information on the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement study performed by the Fitchburg Resource Conservation Commission. 

 

Resource Conservation Commission

The Resource Conservation Commission consists of seven members.  One member is an Alderperson and the remaining six are Fitchburg residents at large, serving staggered three-year terms.   Fitchburg's Environmental Engineer serves as the staff representative for RCC.  RCC generally meets on the third Monday of the month.
