Fitchburg's commitment to public recreation and open space provides residents with about 730 acres of parkland, open spaces and recreation trails in at least 95 different areas. This includes parks, athletic fields, natural areas, greenways, stormwater facilities, neighborhood recreational trails, a golf course, cemetery, and a community center. The County  E-Way System, UW Arboretum, Department of Natural Resources Lands, and federal lands that are located in Fitchburg also provide a large acreage of open space for active and passive recreation.

The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department is responsible for the planning and development of new parks and open spaces, municipal buildings, urban forest, and recreational programming as well as the management of City parks, boulevards, Oak Hall Cemetery, Community Center, and shared-use bike and recreational trails.

Approval of EAB Readiness and Response Plan

To minimize the impact of the emerald ash borer and the potential loss of ash trees in Fitchburg, the City approved the EAB Readiness and Response Plan on March 23rd, 2010. First detected in the Detroit area in 2002, emerald ash borer (EAB) has killed millions of ash trees, primarily in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. It was first found in Wisconsin in 2008, in Ozaukee County and has since been found in six other counties. Emerald ash borer has not yet been detected in Dane County. Given that steps to contain its spread have not worked, if not here already, scientists expect the beetle could be found somewhere in the county in two to four years.
