The duty of the Assessor's Office is to discover, list, and value residential, commercial, agricultural, and personal property. This information is recorded on each year’s assessment roll. The purpose of an assessment is to assure that all property in the city is valued fairly and equitably as required by law. Many individuals, such as property owners, prospective buyers, appraisers, real estate agents, builders, title companies, and government agencies may utilize this information for various reasons.
Generally speaking, property taxes are calculated by multiplying the Assessed Value by the Mill Rate (tax rate). The Assessor assigns the assessed value to the property, however the mill rate is controlled by the budgets of the school districts, technical colleges, and at the state, county, and local levels. The Assessor is not involved with establishing mill rates or in the collection of taxes.
If you have questions about the value of your property, please feel free to contact us.

Upcoming Events
9/21/11: The City of Fitchburg has begun work for the 2012 Assessment year. An appraiser from our office will be stopping by to request a short interior inspection in the neighborhoods of Wildwood, Wildwood Richardson Addition, Wildwood South, and the Glen Arbor Condominiums. In addition, inspections in these and other areas of the city may be for recent building permits, follow-ups on partial construction, recent sales, or to gather general information on your property to ensure the information we use on your 2012 assessment is as accurate as possible. If a walk-through is not convenient at the time the appraiser arrives, you may call our office at your convenience to schedule an appointment.
